This course is suitable for anyone wishing to be the designated first aider in the workplace and anyone wanting to further develop skills and advance from the Foundation Certificate in First Aid at Work.

In addition to the skills covered in the one-day emergency first aid at work course, it also includes skills to help recognise and treat a wider range of injuries and medical conditions including:

  • bone, muscle and joint injuries
  • stroke
  • heart attack and angina attack
  • diabetic emergency
  • severe allergic reaction
  • asthma attack
  • head injuries

Course content

The structure of the 3 day course typically comprises:

Day 1: emergency first aid in the workplace

  • Introduction
  • The role of the first aider
  • Incident and casualty assessment
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Recovery position including management of seizure
  • Choking
  • External bleeding and hypovolemic shock including tourniquets and dressings
  • Minor injuries
  • Written assessments

Day 2: management of illness and injury in the workplace

  • Introduction
  • Respiratory system
  • Hypoxia
  • Chest injuries
  • Asthma and hyperventilation
  • Circulatory system
  • Wounds and external bleeding
  • Eye injuries
  • Shock
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Angina and heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Burns and scalds
  • Poisons

Day 3: management of illness and injury in the workplace

  • Introduction
  • CPR recap
  • Skeletal system

Learning process

This course takes an interactive, hands-on approach with learners having plenty of opportunity to practice each skill covered by the course and build confidence in their first aid skills.

To successfully gain the CIEH Level 3 in First Aid at Work qualification delegates must participate in all assessment activities including completion of two assessment papers and will be able to:

  • demonstrate competence in first-aid procedures for the management of a casualty;
  • identify an individual who is unresponsive and breathing normally (recovery position);
  • identify an individual who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (cardiopulmonary resuscitation);
  • identify individuals with external bleeding and who are in shock

Qualification

All successful delegates will be awarded a CIEH Level 3 in First Aid at Work course certificate.

The award is valid for three years as of the date of assessment.

The qualification is approved by Ofqual, the regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. The qualification is valid for three years, making it suitable for all industries and enabling you to meet HSE requirements.
